Perpetuating Lies About Social Security Reform
I occasionally visit the blog, Watching Washington, which catalogues the waste, fraud, and abuse of our federal government. It's a fairly decent blog despite its paradoxical leftward bent. However, this morning, I ran across a blog post that bothered me: bq. A campaign fund Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) controls is in serious trouble. It was invested in the stock market and has lost nearly $460,000 since 2000. Now there's not enough money in the fund to cover a bank loan the account took out. And these guys want to invest your Social Security withholding. (WashPost) Read that last sentence again. And these guys want to invest your Social Security withholding. NO THEY DON'T. They want US to invest OUR OWN Social Security withholding. But that's not all. The issue about Frist losing $460,000 in the stock market is newsworthy and important to know. However, Democrats jumped on the issue to discredit Social Security reform: bq. Todd Webster, spokesman for outgoing Senate Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.), said in an e-mailed statement that the losses raised questions about a Republican plan to let Americans invest a portion of their Social Security contributions in the stock market. bq. "He still thinks we should put seniors' Social Security funds in the stock market?!" Webster said. First off, the Post article was smart to point out that Webster was nasty partly because Frist traveled to South Dakota to help defeat Webster's boss. (Did you see the double punctuation marks in Webster's quote? Such hostility!) But unfortunately, his quote was printed and published despite the fact that NOWHERE at NO TIME have Republican leaders advocated that seniors invest their payroll taxes in the stock market. Personal account proposals are designed and geared for younger workers, not for grandma and grandpa. In light of this, I'm very tempted to report and expose the lies (as they happen) about Social Security reform that are perpetuated by liberals, RINOs, the Main Stream Media, and partisan bloggers. Especially since everyone is sharpening their knives for this debate. For all of your Club supporters out there, if you would like to send me your own findings, send them to aroth@clubforgrowth.org.
