CAFTA Endorsements

Free trade agreements are always tough to pass through Congress because lawmakers receive concentrated pressure from their constituents depending on the commercial demographics in their districts. Sugar beet farmers in Idaho, textile manufacturers in South Carolina, etc. However, when broadly speaking, free trade can sometimes receive overwhelming support across party lines. That's because free trade soundly trumps protectionism in economic terms. The benefits are larger than the costs, but when played out by special interest groups and spaghetti-spined politicians, the costs are magnified while the benefits are diffused without attention. Luckily, even the liberal media appreciates free trade from time to time. In fact, the top 6 newspapers in the country roundly endorse CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement. As does seven 8 of the Top 10. The remaining three last four other three one has yet to editorialize on the issue. Here's the list:

Rank  Newspaper
USA Today
Wall Street Journal ($)
New York Times
LA Times
Washington Post
NY Daily News
New York Post
Chicago Tribune
Newsday
10  Houston Chronicle
UPDATE (06/13/05): Upon review, the editorial in the Houston Chronicle was not a full-blown endorsement of CAFTA. Written while CAFTA was initially being negotiated, it stressed the importance of freer trade with Central America as a way to bring life-saving drugs to the poverty-stricken region. UPDATE (06/16/05): Newsday just announced its support for CAFTA. That makes 7 out of the top 10 who are in favor of the free trade pact. UPDATE (06/26/05): The Chicago Tribune wrote a damning editorial against Big Sugar, making it the 8th newspaper out of the Top 10 to officially endorse CAFTA. Only the New York Post remains, which hasn't written on the subject yet.
