Ignorant Lawmakers
"Potomac Fever" must be gripping the nation's capital right now and one of the symptoms is bad economic reasoning (you ask, "how is that unlike any other day?" Good point). Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington is asking for an investigation of oil companies which she maintains are artifically inflating gas prices. She's even suggesting that price controls might be the answer. Asked what evidence she has of this horrible "price gouging", she said: bq. "I just don't have the document to prove it." Asked what the true price level of gasoline should be, she said: bq. "I don't know what the level should be." This is ridiculous. You know, I ought to create a list of these "crazy talk" lawmakers. We already know Pete Domenici is on the list. Now Cantwell, and apparently Senators Byron Dorgan and Gordon Smith as well. In fact, let's do it. If you know of any other brilliant lawmaker(s) in Congress who are propagating the price gouging/price control crazy talk, then send me their names. We're going to make a list.
