Club Allies Give Davis an Earful
From today's Washington Times:
Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, the Virginia Republican who has assumed leadership of his party's more liberal members of Congress, said yesterday that conservative groups such as the Club for Growth are hurting the party by refusing to help candidates who don't pass their "litmus test" and by attacking some incumbent Republicans.
You see, under Davis' logic, if a member of Congress has a "R" next to their name, then they automatically become "off limits" to attack regardless of their ideology. (NOTE: That's probably why Davis voted YES on the 527 bill -- he wants to squash political free speech when it threatens the viability of his career and the careers of his liberal colleagues)
Fiscal conservatives know better. Coming to the Club's defense, Jon Fleishman of the venerable Flash Report blog, writes:
I think that Representative Davis is trying to mislead people from the rather obvious fact -- if the Club for Growth is not supporting a Republican (or is opposing one), it is because that Republican is an ECONOMIC FISCAL LIBERAL who is ENDANGERING OUR MAJORITY by opposing the policy goals...[O]ver and over and over, "Main Street" Republicans, hiding behind rhetoric and excuses, play a pivital role in endangering the GOP majority by stopping us from passing true and meaningful reforms that address the fiscal woes of America, and tries to undo this unprecidented expansion of the size and scope of the federal bureaucracy.
And Matt Lewis, writing for the Human Events blog, states:
Once again, Tom Davis proves why he is one of my all-time least favorite Republicans...Bottom line: The Club for Growth is one of the most effective conservative groups in America.
Thanks for the props, guys. Onward and upward.
