Senate Votes to Keep Ethanol Tariff

Right now, the U.S. levies a 54-cent tariff on imported ethanol. Earlier today, the Senate voted on an amendment that would remove this tariff. Doing so would reduce what amounts to a tax on the gasoline we buy.

According to CQ.com ($), "Judd Gregg, R-N.H., said he offered the amendment to the Senate’s energy bill (HR 6) because the United States should be importing more ethanol from friendly nations such as Brazil, rather than oil from troublesome governments such as Hugo Chavez’s regime in Venezuela."

Unfortunately, the amendment failed. Democrats and Republicans alike voted to keep the tax. Go here to see how your senator voted.
