Will Don Young Start Biting People?
Congressman Scott Garrett, along with several other brave House members, have been offering amendments to the Labor-H spending bill to strip it of pork. Yesterday, Garrett sought to remove a pork project inserted into the bill by Rep. Don Young of Alaska. You might recall that Young was one of the authors of the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" earmark. Also recall that Young is a 3-time winner of the "Porker of the Month" award.
Of course, Young was predictably upset that Garrett would go after his beloved earmark. He issued a not-so-subtle threat by saying, "And like i say, those that bite me will be bitten back."
He also attacked Garrett by saying, "I would suggest New Jersey ought to elect some new congressmen."
Below is a video that showcases Young's anger when Garrett sought a point of order against that last remark.
In case you're wondering, here's a cursory review of Young's record on economic issues:
He's a protectionist, having voted NO on NAFTA, trade promotion authority, along with trade deals with Singapore and Chile.
He bends over backwards for labor unions, having voted YES on the offensive card check bill and NO on striking Davis-Bacon language from a spending bill.
He loves subsidies. He voted to keep subsidies for mohair, sugar, and get this...Viagra. He also voted for the massive Farm Bill in 2002, which provided huge subsidies for wheat, cotton, corn, soy beans, and rice.
He voted for the outrageous Medicare prescription drug bill in 2003.
He voted to raise the minimum wage. And he voted to criminalize "price gouging".
And last, but not least, he voted 8 times to raise his own pay in the last 9 years (he was absent for the other vote).
