Heather Wilson's Economic Record

Heather Wilson: An Economic Liberal Walking in Republican Shoes

Washington - Wasting no time, Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) today announced her intention to run for the open Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Senator Pete Domenici. Likewise, the Club for Growth PAC would like to waste no time in reminding the public of Rep. Wilson's economic record - a record that runs both deep and wide in liberal waters.

Since she was elected to the House of Representatives in 1998, Heather Wilson has had a consistent record of supporting tax-and-spend government policies. On Citizens Club for Growth's 2005 congressional scorecard, Wilson ranked a disastrous 212th, with 95% of House Republicans boasting a better record on economic issues. In the 2006 Club for Growth scorecard, Wilson's rank fell even further to 215th. Some of her more noticeable offenses include:

  • Scored a humiliating 10% on the Club for Growth's recent RePORK Card, voting against 45 of 50 anti-pork amendments offered during the FY 2008 appropriations process. Some of the more egregious projects that she supported include the American Ballet Theatre in New York and the National Mule and Packers Museum in Woodlake, CA.
  • Voted for a $4 billion tax increase (RC 756, 07/27/07)
  • Voted for the Medicare Drug Bill (RC #669, 11/22/03)
  • Voted for a minimum wage increase (RC #18, 01/10/07)
  • Voted for the massive subsidy-infested 2002 Farm Bill (RC #123, 05/02/02)
  • Voted for mohair and sugar subsidies (RC #383, 07/11/00, RC #234, 06/08/05)
  • Voted for the so-called "527 Reform Bill" that would drastically restrict political free speech (RC #88, 04/05/06)

"New Mexico voters expect a U.S. senator who supports lower taxes, less wasteful spending, and a 'just say no' attitude towards special interests giveaways," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "Unfortunately, Heather Wilson's record in the House leaves a lot to be desired. Last time I checked, supporting tax hikes, pork projects, and other liberal policies is not the mark of an economic conservative."
