Say What?
I was shocked this morning when I saw the print advertisement on page 26 of the most recent issue of The Economist magazine. The headline of the ad reads, "It's time to embrace protectionist economics."
The ad was paid for by the Health & Safety Executive, which is a government agency in the United Kingdom. I believe it's their version of our OSHA meant to enforce workplace regulations. The ad seeks a chief economist to help the agency measure the potential effects of new policy ideas.
So what's with the protectionism? Is it a play on words? As in, protecting the work place? If they were trying to catch my attention using that method, it worked. Especially since The Economist is a very strong pro-free trade magazine and because NOBODY uses the word "protectionism" in a positive light.
