McCain Would Vote Against Tax Cuts Again

So Much for Economic Conservatism:
McCain Would Vote Against 2001 and 2003 Tax Cuts Again

Washington -- On Friday night, Senator John McCain told "Hannity and Colmes" guest host Rich Lowry that he would vote against the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts all over again (watch here).

LOWRY: If you don't mind, I want to ask you a domestic policy question, a straight talk question, if you will. In retrospect, was it a mistake for you to vote against the Bush tax cuts?

MCCAIN: No, because I had significant tax cuts, and there was restraint of spending included in my proposal. I saw no restraint in spending. We presided over the greatest increase in the size of government since the Great Society. Spending went completely out of control. It's still out of control. Wasteful earmark spending is a disgrace, and it caused us to alienate our Republican base.

John McCain was one of only two Republican senators in 2001 and one of only three Republican senators in 2003 to vote against the tax cuts. Although he argues that he opposed the tax cuts because they were not accompanied by sufficient spending cuts, at the time he resorted to class-warfare demagoguery, arguing in a vein that sounded very much like Ted Kennedy that "I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us at the expense of middle-class Americans who need tax relief."

"By voting against the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, John McCain opposed the most pro-growth domestic policy in a generation and teamed up with the most left-wing senators in Congress to undermine them," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "Although he claims to support making the tax cuts permanent his continued refusal to acknowledge the error of his ways casts a long shadow of doubt on the Senator's commitment to lower taxes and his appreciation for the economic prosperity the tax cuts have created in this country."
