Club for Growth PAC Endorses Steve Pearce in New Mexico Senate Race
Washington – Today, Club for Growth PAC endorsed Republican Representative Steve Pearce (NM-2) over his primary opponent Rep. Heather Wilson (NM-1) in the Republican primary for New Mexico’s open Senate seat.
Steve Pearce has signed a pledge against raising taxes and has honored that pledge faithfully. He voted against every Democratic measure to raise taxes, including the two tax hikes in the farm bill and energy bill this year. Last year, Pearce voted for the Republican alternative budget which included spending and tax cuts, and voted to grant the President the line-item veto. Pearce also voted against the minimum wage hike and against the “card check” union bill, which would deny workers a secret ballot vote on the unionization of their work place. Finally, Pearce scored a solid 82% on the Club for Growth’s 2007 RePORK Card, which measures House members’ votes against egregious wasteful spending.
In stark contrast, Heather Wilson is one of the most liberal Republicans in the House of Representatives and, if elected, would be one of the most liberal Republican Senators. Although Wilson signed the no-tax pledge when she was first elected to the House in 1998, she has broken the pledge numerous times in the past ten years. She voted against a permanent moratorium on Internet taxes in 2000, for the Farm Bill this year, which contained a tax hike, and for the government-expanding SCHIP bill, which increased cigarette taxes.
On spending issues, Rep. Wilson has consistently supported expanding big government. She voted to waste taxpayer dollars on subsidies for milk, mohair, and even Viagra, and was one of forty Republicans to vote against the 2007 GOP alternative budget. On the Club for Growth’s 2007 RePORK Card, she scored an embarrassing 10%. Unlike Pearce, she has also supported increased regulation, voting to increase the minimum wage and to criminalize “price gouging.”
“It is clear that Heather Wilson is out of step with New Mexico Republicans,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “As a Representative, she has sided with the Democrats to increase taxes, increase spending, and increase government’s intrusion in the marketplace. As a Senator, we fear she will vote the same way. In contrast, Steve Pearce has been a reliable opponent of tax increases and has demonstrated a willingness to curtail the growth of government.”
