A Porky Alternative to the DeMint Amendment?
I'm hearing through the Capitol Hill grapevine that Senator Kent Conrad is going to offer a weaker alternative to the DeMint amendment is order to give pork-loving Senators political cover after they vote against DeMint's proposal.
This strategy, of course, could generate enough "no" votes so that DeMint's amendment fails. Conrad's alternative would keep the favor factory doors wide open, but it would increase transparency and accountability. Granted, this is good reform, but we should NOT support it at the expense of a full one-year moratorium.
Don't let the big spenders fool you. They aren't interested in any kind of reform.
UPDATE: A Senate staffer told me that "Old Bull" Republicans are teaming up with Conrad and other Democrats to stop the DeMint amendment. The staffer said they are pulling out all of the stops to take it down.
