Hillary Should Swear Off Earmarks
Hillary Should Swear Off Earmarks Too
Washington – As more and more members of Congress adopt a self-imposed moratorium on earmarks, there is one glaring omission from the list: Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
To date, the bipartisan list of members who have sworn off earmarks totals 29 representatives and 7 senators, and is growing by the day. A long-time opponent of pork, Senator John McCain has never requested earmarks, and recently, Senator Barack Obama issued a press release announcing he will not be requesting earmarks for Illinois this year. While Hillary Clinton has joined Barack Obama in sponsoring Senator Jim DeMint’s amendment instituting a moratorium on earmarks, she has not accepted a personal moratorium upon herself.
“As presidential candidates, Senators McCain, Obama, and Clinton are promoting themselves as leaders of the country,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey, “but being a leader means doing the right thing even when everyone else isn’t. “John McCain has long been a leader on the issue of wasteful spending, and Senator Obama has now recognized the importance of leading by example. What is Hillary Clinton waiting for?”
“Earmark reform in this country would be nowhere if all members of Congress adopted the ‘everyone else is doing it’ attitude. It is time for Hillary Clinton to join the fight against pork and swear off earmarks.”
