The Four Horsemen from Georgia
Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA-09) joins three of his fellow House Republicans from Georgia in swearing off pork. From the Associated Press:
More than half of Georgia's Republicans in the U.S. House have joined an anti-earmark crusade and pledged to give up pet spending requests for their districts.
[...]Republican Reps. Paul Broun of Athens, Nathan Deal of Gainesville, Tom Price of Roswell and Lynn Westmoreland of Grantville said they will forgo earmarks for at least one year.
"People around this country are looking for a change in how government does its business," said Broun, whose predecessor, the late Republican Rep. Charlie Norwood, helped win millions of dollars in earmarks for local institutions such as the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. "I think my colleagues in the House have learned that lesson, that we need to be the party of very little government and low taxes."
[...]Broun, Deal, Price and Westmoreland said for now that their moratorium will last for a year, but they could continue it if true reforms aren't enacted.
"If you're going to change the system, you can't continue doing the same thing," Price said. "I believe the system is corrupt."
These four gentlemen get it. They are displaying honest and brave leadership on an issue that is long overdue for reform. Their colleagues should take notice.
