Letter to the Editor
Club member Joseph Funk wrote the following letter, which was published in the Wall Street Journal this morning. It's in response to an article titled, "Our Great Economic U-Turn", by Thomas Frank:
I have to say I feel sorry for Mr. Frank for believing what he wrote. He is being duped. The U.S. population has grown significantly over the last 20 years so the statistics he used to draw conclusions do not take that into account. The American economy is a ladder, and it leads to a better life. That is why poor people risk their lives to enter this country, which is a step up for them. But let's talk 20 years ago. Twenty years ago I grew up in a poor family and so did six of my closest friends, and 20 years later our own families have stepped up the ladder and have ceased being poor (bottom 10%) and have become wealthy (top 10%). The same people are not poor every generation, almost all move up, and are replaced by new entrants at the bottom. Any politician who supports special interests like the farm bill, favoring one group over another, is chipping away at the ladder. Support the Club for Growth, not political parties.
