McCain Stands Strong on Free Trade

Washington – The Club for Growth PAC applauded Senator John McCain for highlighting the importance of free trade policies with Colombia and Mexico on his trip to South America today.

“When it comes to his support for free trade, Senator McCain has not wavered one bit,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “He deserves credit for persistently making the case to the American people that free trade is vital to our economic growth even when the issue is less than popular.”

Nearly all reputable economists agree that free trade benefits all countries involved, and the U.S. is no exception. Over the past twenty-five years, America has entered into a number of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, only to see our exports explode. Free trade offers Americans more competition, greater choice, lower prices, and even new jobs.

In contrast, Obama has staked out a staunchly protectionist stand, threatening to renegotiate NAFTA and opposing the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Barack Obama’s protectionist policies will translate into tariffs on thousands of goods Americans buy and use every day. At a time of rising food and commodity prices, such a policy will prove devastating to American consumers and businesses.

“We encourage Senator McCain to continue to talk about the benefits of free trade,” Mr. Toomey continued. “With Senator Obama threatening to revive American protectionism in this country, McCain’s clear voice on this issue is vital to the country’s economy.”
