New Ad in Alaska

Club for Growth PAC Releases New Ad in Alaska Congressional Race

Washington – Today, Club for Growth PAC begins airing a new television ad in Alaska, highlighting Don Young’s suspicious record on earmarks. The $350,000 ad buy will run on broadcast television and cable systems throughout the state through primary day.

Don Young argues that he works hard to secure earmarks for Alaska, but he doesn’t tell Alaska taxpayers that he also works hard to secure earmarks for his special-interest buddies in Florida. According to multiple news reports, Don Young secured a $10 million earmark for a road in Florida even though local officials didn’t want it. Newspapers say a Florida developer would benefit from the project—the same developer who raised $40,000 in contributions for Don Young (NY Times, 06/07/07; Washington Post, 04/17/08). This ad seeks to educate voters about Don Young’s real record on earmarks.

According to the Fairbanks Daily News Miner, Don Young declared at a candidate forum that “every earmark he’s sought has been at the request of Alaskans.” Oh really? Does this include the $10 million he secured for a road in Florida? Don Young should explain to Alaskans why he is spending their hard-earned tax dollars on projects in Florida and why he is trying so hard to hide the truth about his record.

“Don Young is trying to claim he puts Alaska first, but after thirty-five years in Washington, it is clear that Don Young is just another Washington politician,” said Club for Growth Executive Director David Keating. “Alaska voters have a right to know that Don Young is spending their hard-earned tax dollars on special-interest favors in Florida. They deserve a congressman who really puts Alaska first.”
