Udall Flip-Flops on Energy

Udall Flip-Flops on Energy

Washington – If flip-flopping were an Olympic sport Mark Udall would win a gold medal. After nine years of opposing efforts to expand domestic oil drilling and exploration, Mark Udall is supporting limited drilling in an attempt to save his political career.

In a Denver Post article today, Rep. Udall claimed that the national energy crisis was responsible for his latest transformation. But only three months ago, Rep. Udall voted against a measure that would have expanded federal leases for oil exploration and development in the Outer Continental Shelf and ANWR (RC #321, 05/14/08). The average gas price on May 14th was $3.69. Did Mark Udall think that was not a sufficient reason to support the legislation?

Furthermore, Udall’s support for the “Gang of Ten” energy bill only allows very limited drilling and imposes cumbersome regulations that will make sure Americans see very little relief. If Mark Udall really wants to help Americans, he should disown his numerous votes against drilling in the past and come out in support of a broad-based drilling and exploration program.

“Mark Udall is proving himself to be a consummate politician at a time when we need real leaders in Washington,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “In contrast, Bob Schaffer has always been a leader on energy issues. When Schaffer was in Congress back in 2001, he supported expanded drilling efforts while Mark Udall voted against those efforts. If Coloradans want a leader who will fight for expanding American energy, Bob Schaffer is their candidate.”
