Travis Childers (MS-01)
Background:
- Official Website
- First elected in 2008
- Washington Office Phone #: (202) 225-4306
The Myth:
- "Childers, on the other hand, stresses his independence and his affiliation with the fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats, who oppose large federal spending bills." - Clarion Ledger, Sept. 19, 2010 (Source)
- Referring to Childers and fellow Blue Dog Rep. Gene Taylor, a Clarion Ledger headline on Sept 26, 2010, read, "Conservative 'Blue Dog' Democrats scramble to hold seats." (Source)
- "He is a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition" - Rep. Travis Childers' official website (Source)
- "Hard-working North Mississippians use a balanced budget on a daily basis in order to make ends meet, and the federal government should operate no differently." - Rep. Travis Childers' official website (Source)

The Bottom Line:
Perhaps referring to the Clarion Ledger quotes mentioned above, a comment left on a local blog said, "Why do newspapers keep referring to Childers as fiscally conservative? What is fiscally conservative about voting to add $800 billion to our debt and now adding another $26 billion? [the Stimulus II bill]"
This is a valid question. Childers maybe have avoided support for most of the big ticket Obama bills, but he still contributed to the large increase in the national debt with the stimulus, the bailouts, and earmarks.
