Introducing the California Club for Growth

Posted at 05:54 PM by Andrew Roth | Topic:
From the Washington Times: bq. The Club for Growth, an anti-tax group that has helped fund conservative challengers to liberal Republicans, announced yesterday the launch of a separate California organization with like-minded principles. bq. Economist Arthur Laffer will serve as chairman of the California Club for Growth. Assemblyman Tony Strickland will serve as president. California Club for Growth also has established an Internal Revenue Code Section 527 political committee that will advocate lower taxes and limited government in the fall election campaign in California, the organization said. bq. "Following the election of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, it is only fitting that a new organization should work for economic growth in California," said Stephen Moore, president of the National Club for Growth. "The California Club for Growth and its 527 group will advocate policies during the election campaign in support of lower taxes, curbing wasteful spending and promoting free trade that can bring a new era of economic growth to California."

Is Michael Moore Having Second Thoughts?

The following excerpt is from a letter that Michael Moore wrote to President Bush. He republished it in his book, Dude, Where's My Country?: bq. Dear George: bq. ...Every last dime from my tax cut is going to trickle down on your pointy little head in the hopes that, come election night, you will join the ranks of the unemployed and be sent packing back to the ranch. I will give the maximum legal amount to the candidate who has the best chance of defeating you. I will give the maximum legal amount to any congressional candidate who has the chance of helping take back the House or Senate from the Republicans. I will write check after check after check until there is no more of my tax cut left to spend. I will ask the readers of this book to send me their ideas on how to best spend my tax cut, including which candidates in their area would be the best to support. I have established a website, www.spendmikestaxcut.com, and I will ask people to visit it and held me spend the thousands of dollars you have given me to toss you out of office. I will ask others who can do without their tax cuts to join me and use their bonus money to get our country back from those who seek to undermine all that we have stood for. bq. I hope you understand that none of this is personal and that I am still grateful to you for giving me this gift. It will be money well spent." Well spent? Apparently, that money hasn't been spent at all. According to the latest FEC filings, Mr. Moore hasn't contributed ONE CENT to anyone, much less John Kerry (or Wesley Clark, whom he previously endorsed). Nothing to congressional candidates, either. When is he going to write "check after check after check"? Also, if you click on that website he listed in the letter, you will find that it goes nowhere. That's not an error. He simply hasn't set up the website. What's he waiting for?

Chris Homan, campaign manager, speaks for Rep. Pete Sessions (GOP) about the wasteful nature of pork, as taken from a Weekly Standard article (emphasis added): bq. Homan says Sessions will work to keep money in local communities, not tax people heavily, then return the money at pennies on the dollar. "Let's not make people have to go to Washington and kiss the ring and make sure they know who their sugar daddy was," he says. Sessions is running in TX-32 against Rep. Martin Frost (D). Both are incumbents fighting for a district that was re-drawn by the Texas Legislature.
