Washington, DC – On the eve of the Supreme Court decision on ObamaCare, the Club for Growth PAC today pointed out that former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson backed an individual mandate for people to purchase health insurance, the central part of ObamaCare.

 

In an appearance with former Clinton Health Secretary Donna Shalala in 2006, Tommy Thompson clearly and forcefully embraced an individual mandate. In the video released by Club for Growth PAC today, Thompson says:

 

“You also got to consider strongly, and I happen to support that what Massachusetts did, and that is requiring health insurance, the coverage of health insurance. This is little bit opposed to what Republicans really think or propose. But the truth of the matter is, just like automobile insurance, you gotta have coverage.  And if you’re gonna be able to cover the uninsured you’re gonna have to have some degree of a mandate to cover the uninsured.”(C-Span, 4/17/06)

“Any time Tommy Thompson says he never supported an individual mandate for health insurance, he’s just being dishonest,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Tommy Thompson supported an individual mandate just like in ObamaCare, and this video proves it. Once again, it’s clear that Wisconsin Republicans can’t trust Tommy Thompson to stand up to the Obama agenda and fight for limited government.”
