Specifically, Lieberman’s legislation was: “To provide for a program of scientific research on abrupt climate change, to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by establishing a market-driven system of greenhouse gas tradeable allowances, to limit greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and reduce dependence upon foreign oil, and ensure benefits to consumers from the trading in such allowances.” (Source: Roll Call Vote #420, 2003)
Lugar was one of just six Republicans to join with 37 Democrats in voting for the Lieberman proposal.
“Senator Lugar supports a cap-and-trade scheme and voted for one in 2003 while most Republicans voted no,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “In elections, facts matter, and the fact is that Senator Lugar voted for cap-and-trade, while Richard Mourdock never will. Senator Lugar’s attempt to mislead voters about his record of support for Obamaesque policies will be rejected by Hoosiers.”
