Labor Unions Starting to Oppose ObamaCare

Posted on May. 21, 13 | 07:55 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Health Care Reform
From The Hill newspaper:

Labor unions are breaking with President Obama on ObamaCare. Months after the president’s reelection, a variety of unions are publicly balking at how the administration plans to implement the landmark law. They warn that unless there are changes, the results could be catastrophic.

DeMint: Obamacare Death Star Will Strike Soon

Posted on Jun. 30, 11 | 12:41 PM by Ariel Judah | Topic: Health Care Reform
Sen. Jim DeMint writes in the Washington Examiner:

President Obama’s healthcare takeover is poised to land a devastating blow to American families and the economy of a size and scope never seen before.

Obama’s bureaucratic Death Star becomes fully operational in 2014. When that happens, it will lay waste to the private healthcare system by imposing unanticipated costs on companies and individuals that will cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance and be forced into the new government program.

... Even Obama’s former budget director, Peter Orszag, is admitting the obvious. Previously used by the White House to sell ObamaCare in the media as a net cost saver, Orszag is now admitting that ObamaCare could create a “spiral effect” of employees losing their private care and the true costs quickly become “unsustainable.”

AP: Glitch in Obamacare Would Place Couples Earning Up to $64,000 in Medicaid

Posted on Jun. 21, 11 | 02:24 PM by Ariel Judah | Topic: Health Care Reform
The Washington Times:

With every passing day, we keep discovering more and more problems with President Obama's national health care law. The Associated Press points out the latest glitch:

"Government number-crunchers say President Barack Obama's health care law would let several million middle-class people get nearly free coverage by making them eligible for the Medicaid program for the poor.

"The result was discovered by Medicare officials who make long-range cost estimates, after the law was signed.

"It would affect about 3 million early retirees. A married couple with an annual income of $64,000 could still get Medicaid. That's because starting in 2014, their Social Security benefits would no longer count as income.

"The administration and Democratic lawmakers say it's a well-meaning effort to simplify rules. States want relief from Medicaid costs, a top issue in the White House budget talks with Congress."

Ron Johnson and Douglas Holtz-Eakin: Coming Soon: A Bigger, Costlier Obamacare

Posted on Jun. 20, 11 | 12:05 PM by Ariel Judah | Topic: Health Care Reform
Sen. Ron Johnson and Douglas Holtz-Eakin write in the Washington Post:

Obamacare poses two great dangers to our nation: lower quality of care and runaway costs. It will stifle innovation and lead to rationing. But the overwhelming cost and the damage it will do to our nation’s finances at a pivotal moment in our history deserve greater scrutiny.

The promises Obamacare supporters have made about the ultimate cost of the program are based on highly unlikely premises. Those who support the 2010 health-care law are betting that costs will remain under control largely because its central feature — health insurance exchanges, which amount to a centralized, government-run market of subsidized insurance policies — will not be all that popular. They are counting on the notion that when the government offers “free” money, there will be few takers. This is not realistic.

The history of entitlement programs is certainly not encouraging. Congress tends to overpromise and underfund. Medicare, for example, cost nine times more in 1990 than was expected in 1965 ($109 billion, instead of the $12 billion originally estimated). We don’t believe that the federal government has gotten any better at cost estimates or resisting the temptation to expand programs. And at a time of crushing deficits, we can’t afford to be that far off again.

After ObamaCare, 30% of employers to drop health coverage

Posted on Jun. 07, 11 | 10:32 AM by Barney Keller | Topic: Health Care Reform
MarketWatch:

Once provisions of the Affordable Care Act start to kick in during 2014, at least three of every 10 employers will probably stop offering health coverage, a survey released Monday shows.

While only 7% of employees will be forced to switch to subsidized-exchange programs, at least 30% of companies say they will “definitely or probably” stop offering employer-sponsored coverage, according to the study published in McKinsey Quarterly.

Obama Made His Decision, Now Let Him Enforce It!

Posted on Feb. 02, 11 | 08:10 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Health Care Reform
From National Journal ($):

Following a ruling from U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson that the health care law is unconstitutional, officials from at least two states party to the decision have announced they will not implement the health care law. Republican Gov. Rick Scott of Florida and Wisconsin Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen have said they believe the ruling effectively relieves their states of carrying out the law's edicts.

McConnell to offer Repeal Amendment TODAY!

Posted on Feb. 01, 11 | 01:33 PM by Michael Connolly | Topic: Health Care Reform
Robert Costa of National Review is reporting that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell will offer ObamaCare repeal as an amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill, now being debated by the Senate.

This comes one day after Sen. Jim DeMint announced his own repeal bill, identical to the House-passed repeal, had garnered the support of all 47 Senate Republicans.

If McConnell's amendment strategy works, we should see an ObamaCare repeal vote this week.
