Key Vote Alert - "NO" on Sandy Relief Bill (HR 152)

Posted on Jan. 24, 13 | 03:15 PM by Barney Keller | Topic: Key Vote Alert Senate
KEY VOTE ALERT
"NO" on Senate Fiscal Cliff Deal (HR 8)

The Club for Growth urges all members of the U.S. Senate to vote "NO" on the $50 billion Sandy relief bill (HR 152). Consideration on the Senate floor is expected as soon as today. If there is a vote on the package, it will be included in the Club for Growth's 2013 congressional scorecard.

Instead of passing a pork-filled bill packed with non-emergency spending items, Congress should pass a disaster relief-only bill that is fully offset with spending cuts elsewhere and contains measures to ensure accountability over billions in taxpayer dollars.

As we have repeatedly said in previous key vote alerts, there are more responsible ways to pass disaster relief legislation. For starters, funds could be released in installments to make sure the resources are spent more wisely. They should also strip out all immaterial line items, and fully offset all expenditures with spending cuts elsewhere. Serious reform would also include a way for the states to take over the responsibility for future disaster relief funding so that accountability is more localized.

Our Congressional Scorecard for the 113th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to our members and to the public.

Rep. Thomas Massie's View on Paul Krugman

Posted on Jan. 17, 13 | 08:35 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Conservative Rock Stars
POLITICO has an article out today about freshman Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky's 4th congressional district.  Massie was elected with Club member support last year and has had - as far as I can tell - a perfect record on our issues.

In the article, Massie told POLITICO that he once took a macroeconomics course from liberal economist Paul Krugman.

“It was a very frustrating class. Although he used equations to describe his solutions, he never really solved his equations. We were asked to believe certain fundamental principles that couldn’t be proven,” he said. “It was more of a religion class than a science class.”

Sounds about right.  You can learn more about Massie here.

Rock Star vs. RINO

Posted on Jan. 15, 13 | 04:22 PM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Conservative Rock Stars
RINO Rep. Mike Simpson (Club lifetime rating: 57%) took to the local press in Idaho to criticize his far more conservative colleague, Rep. Raul Labrador (Club lifetime rating: 100%):

Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson says fellow Republican Rep. Raul Labrador has forever undermined his effectiveness with an “irresponsible” role in plotting to defeat GOP House Speaker John Boehner.

“I think there are 15 or 16 members of our conference that have substantially lost credibility,” said Simpson, one of Boehner’s closest friends in the House.

...In response, Labrador called Simpson a “bully” and “an old-school legislator that went to Washington, D.C., to compromise.”

“That’s how you get to a $1 trillion deficit, by just tinkering around the edges,” Labrador said. “But I think we live in a new world where we have some very serious fiscal issues in America, and you need to have people who are willing to say ‘no’ to a lot of things — things that are very popular back home — and that are willing to put their political careers on the line.”

Kudos to Labrador for standing up for economic freedom, even when it means disagreeing with your less-than-principled in-state colleague.

Key Vote Alert - "YES" on Mulvaney Amdt (#4) to HR 152

Posted on Jan. 15, 13 | 11:11 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Key Vote Alert House
KEY VOTE ALERT
"YES" on Mulvaney Amdt (#4) to HR 152

The Club for Growth urges all members of the U.S. House to vote "YES" on Rep. Mulvaney's amendment (#4) to the Sandy relief bill (HR 152). Consideration on the House floor is expected later today. This vote will be included in the Club for Growth's 2013 congressional scorecard.

This amendment would pay for the $17 billion bill by applying an across-the-board cut of 1.63% to all discretionary spending.

The underlying bill continues to remain unpaid for, and this amendment would fix that. It's the very least Congress can do to start acting in a fiscally responsible manner.

Our Congressional Scorecard for the 113th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to our members and to the public.

Key Vote Alert - "NO" on Sandy Relief Bill and Frelinghuysen Amdt.

Posted on Jan. 14, 13 | 10:29 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Key Vote Alert House
KEY VOTE ALERT
"NO" on the Sandy Relief Bill (HR 152) and Frelinghuysen Amdt. (#2)

The Club for Growth urges all members of the U.S. House to vote "NO" on both the $17 billion Sandy relief bill (HR 152) and the Frelinghuysen amendment (#2) to add another $33.67 billion in funding for long-term projects. Consideration on the House floor is expected this week. These votes will be included in the Club for Growth's 2013 congressional scorecard.

Disasters may be unpredictable, but we know with 100% certainty that they will occur. Therefore, Congress shouldn't keep passing massive "emergency" relief bills that aren't paid for, have little oversight, and are stuffed with pork. Also, Congress shouldn't use disasters like Hurricane Sandy as an excuse to spend billions on long-term projects that should be considered during the regular appropriations process.

As we have said in previous key vote alerts, there are more responsible ways to pass disaster relief legislation.

The "Hell No" Caucus

Posted on Jan. 08, 13 | 08:04 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Conservative Rock Stars
From the POLITICO:

[Freshman Rep. Tom Cotton] is neither a hick, nor a blowhard. But he was virtually invisible until he won an audience with the Club for Growth. The Club has pioneered a technique that has helped make Congress an even more polarized mess. Instead of wasting time on high-profile races, the group intervenes in contested Republican primaries, often putting its money on the most conservative of a conservative bunch, like Cotton.

Chris Chocola, a former Republican House member from Indiana who is president of the Club for Growth, said the group zeroes in on candidates who have been overlooked or opposed by party leaders: candidates like Cotton, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio — all of whom started at single digits in polls, then went on to beat establishment candidates after getting backing from the Club.

“The establishment opposed them, and now they’re talked about as the future stars of the party,” Chocola said. “The establishment is focused on party-building instead of the principles the candidates hold. Now these are national leaders who can be persuasive on fiscally conservative issues and can re-instill confidence that the Republican Party believes things.”

You'll want to read the whole thing.

The Old Bulls Are Dwindling

Posted on Jan. 07, 13 | 10:38 AM by Andrew Roth | Topic: Conservative Rock Stars
It works both ways, but this POLITICO article makes it sound like this is a bad thing.

"The Senate's old bulls are rapidly fading as a band of more junior members in both parties seek to upend the seniority system that has ruled the chamber for generations. Gone are the likes of Bob Byrd, Daniel Inouye, Ted Stevens or Ted Kennedy. Growing are the number of younger senators with either little experience in national politics or who were House members from a hyper-partisan institution in which the majority can run roughshod over the minority. It's an image that doesn't square with the popular stereotype of septuagenarian senators presiding over an aging institution. Instead, most of the senators in the 113th Congress have barely served one term, and those lawmakers are pushing their respective leaders to engage in more direct confrontations not only with the other party but also on long-standing Senate customs. Appropriators have been weakened. Earmarks are gone. And the political discourse is growing more rancorous."
