WASHINGTON – Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and U.S. Reps. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) led a surging pro-growth caucus in the U.S. Congress last year, according to the Club for Growth’s 2009 Congressional Scorecard, released today.

DeMint, Hensarling, and Flake each earned his fifth consecutive perfect score of 100 – one for each of the five years the Club for Growth or the Citizens Club for Growth have published scorecards.  Their adherence to principle was not a surprise to pro-growth conservatives.  What was a surprise was how many of their colleagues joined them to fight the expansion of big government under the Democrats in 2009.  Five Senators joined DeMint with perfect scores, and seven House members joined Hensarling and Flake.

Even beyond the fifteen 100s, the news was good.  Twenty-two of forty Republican Senators scored 90 percent or better, and fifty-eight House Republicans did the same.  Those seventy-nine members will receive the Club’s “Defender of Economic Freedom” award later this year.

"2009 was a tough year for the cause of limited government and economic liberty, but the Club’s scorecard shows a silver lining,” said Club President Chris Chocola.  “Many Republicans are starting to rediscover their pro-growth, pro-freedom roots.  Hopefully, all of  Washington will start to realize the benefits of expanding economic freedom, and the costs of expanding government.”

Perfect scores on the 2009 Club for Growth Congressional Scorecard were earned by Senators Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.); and by U.S. Representatives Jeff Flake, Jeb Hensarling, Tom Price (R-Ga.), Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), John Linder (R-Ga.), Paul Broun (R-Ga.), Doug Lamborn (R-Col.), Tom McClintock (R-Cal.), and John Shadegg (R-Ariz.).

At the other end of the spectrum, four Senators and seventy-seven Representatives, all Democrats, scored zero.

The full House and Senate scorecards are available at the Club for Growth’s website, here.
