If you’re familiar with Brian, you know that he was named one of the top economic forecasters by USA Today in 2004 and was previously named the #1 economic forecaster in 2001 by the Wall Street Journal.

I spoke with him about his new book called, It’s Not As Bad As You Think: Why Capitalism Trumps Fear and The Economy Will Thrive.

The book is based on Brian's contrarian belief that despite Obama's disastrous economic policies, the country's economic recovery is well on it's way and predicts 4.5% GDP growth in 2010.

CFG Podcast - Dan Griswold Andrew Roth Thu, 22 Oct 2009 14:22:14 EST Mad About Trade: Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization.

It's a fantastic book, so I hope after you listen to the interview you'll go out and buy it. Here's one of my favorite quotes (p. 123):

For a nation, free trade is like fresh air and exercise. It can be uncomfortable at first as the body adjusts to the new regime. We breathe hard, we sweat, and our muscles ache. But soon our aerobic capacity expands, and we discover that we can run faster and farther, we can lift more weight, and we can more quickly shake off the ups and downs of life. In contrast, protectionism is like lounging on the couch, watching reruns, and eating Cheetos in a slate room with the windows shuttered. It may feel comforting in the short run, but it leads to flabbiness, fatigue, and decline for the protected parts of the body.

If you'd like to read Dan's other publications on free trade, please go here. Thanks to Dan and his team, you can also find out how your lawmakers in Congress vote on trade issues.

CFG Podcast - Robert Whaples Andrew Roth Tue, 22 Sep 2009 17:39:51 EST Is there any agreement among economists on hot button issues like health care, free trade, or even Wal-Mart? To find out, Dr. Robert Whaples, an economics professor and chair of the economics department at Wake Forest University, recently conducted a survey (PDF) of his fellow economists. You might be surprised to hear the answers.

If the audio player doesn't work, here's the file (MP3).]]> CFG Podcast - Art Laffer Andrew Roth Tue, 02 Jun 2009 17:49:03 EST Earlier today, I spoke with one of the biggest heros of the supply-side movement, Dr. Art Laffer. He recently wrote the introduction to a new book about Reagan's 1980 plan to bring the country back into prosperity. It's a short, easy-to-read book called President Ronald Reagan's Initial Actions Project. You can find it on Amazon.com and you can even get a Kindle version as well.

During the podcast, Laffer talks candidly about the book, his views on Obama, monetary policy, free trade, the current state of the GOP, along with other issues.

I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did. Laffer is passionate guy who wears his love of the the free market on his sleeve. We need more people like him.

CFG Podcast - Bob Levy Andrew Roth Thu, 19 Mar 2009 17:11:30 EST Earlier today, I had the chance to talk with Bob Levy, the chairman of the Cato Institute and the man widely credited for getting the DC gun ban overturned. But I spoke with him today about the book he co-authored with William Mellor called The Dirty Dozen. In this fascinating book, Levy and Mellor outlined the 12 worst Supreme Court decisions since the New Deal started in 1933. We focused on three of them and how they relate to TARP, the mortgage cramdown bill, and the stimulus.

I hope you enjoy this podcast. Levy is an extremely brilliant guy and an absolute joy to talk with. If you're interested, you can buy his book here.

CFG Podcast - John Rutledge Andrew Roth Thu, 26 Feb 2009 15:18:13 EST Yesterday, I had the chance to speak with Dr. John Rutledge. John is a fascinating guy to talk to. Trained as an economist, he runs his own investment firm called Rutledge Capital, but he also advises government officials here in the United States, the U.K., Ireland, Kuwait, and China. I called him because he recently had the unique opportunity of going to North Korea where he's trying to open the country up to the global market. He also recently wrote a book that I highly recommended called Lessons From a Road Warrior: How I Fell Off a Horse, Earned 15 Million Air Miles, Got Sand in My Shoes and Learned How to Invest.

The audio is a bit muffled at times, but I think it turned out well (especially when he called Tim Geitner the "Doogie Howser" of high finance...and that wasn't a compliment).

If he's not on your Twitter radar (and he should be), check him out here. And here's his blog, which includes notes from his North Korea trip.

CFG Podcast - Brian Wesbury Andrew Roth Fri, 20 Feb 2009 14:55:10 EST Earlier this afternoon, I interview free market economist Brian Wesbury of First Trust Portfolios. We talked about the Rick Santelli Uprising, Obama's misguided mortgage plan (and the stock market's reaction to it), mark-to-market accounting rules, and his current economic outlook for the economy. Below are also some selected quotes by Wesbury taken from the interview.

WESBURY QUOTES

"Every time [politicians in Washington] come out with a new plan and stand on the steps of the Capitol or wherever, and say 'This plan will save America', the market goes down even more."

"This idea that it's somehow too late to change mark-to-market...I think that argument just proves that whoever says it doesn't understand the issue."

"[Mark-to-market] is freezing banks from doing anything."

"Today money market account balances are over 55%, probably today up closer to 60%, of the total value of the S&P 500. It's never been this high. Capital is on strike."

"If the bond market was Clinton's barometer or bellwether, the stock market is going to be Obama's. And he's gonna have to figure out a why to get [the stock market] up. That tells me that he's going to be forced to look at alternatives."
