Sponsorship of Corker-Toomey Tariff Bill (S. 3013)
The Club for Growth supports the Corker-Toomey tariff bill (S. 3013) and will be key voting the sponsorship of the bill. While a vote on the proposal hasn’t been scheduled, the Club urges all Senators to sponsor it and vote YES if it is brought to the floor for consideration. Sponsorship of the bill will be included in the Club’s 2018 congressional scorecard.
The Corker-Toomey bill requires congressional approval of all tariffs designated under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. Conservatives and liberals should support this policy because it helps reclaim Congress’s authority on this issue. When an administration is given too much latitude to determine what is a “national security threat”, it is inevitable that overreach will occur. With a trade war ratcheting up today, it is imperative to make it more difficult to raise anti-growth tariffs that will only prolong the war and stall the economy.
