Club for Growth President Chris Chocola: “Senator Lugar and Senator Hatch must hear the loud voices of constituents fed up with never-ending spending and debt.”

Washington, DC –Congress will soon vote on raising the debt ceiling, but the bill may not contain a strong spending reduction package, spending caps and Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. Based on their records, it’s clear that long-serving Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) might think that more spending and higher debt is an acceptable option. The Club for Growth is launching a TV ad campaign in Indiana and Utah to help convince them to do the opposite and oppose more spending and debt.

Both Senator Lugar and Senator Hatch have often voted for more debt in the past. For example, Senator Lugar voted for the Wall Street bailout, the auto bailout, and the bailouts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He’s been in Washington so long that back in the 1970s, he even voted to bail out New York City. Like Lugar, Senator Hatch voted for the Wall Street bailout, and the Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac bailouts.  Senator Hatch has voted to raise the debt ceiling five times in just the last ten years.  With records like these, and yet another big spending vote approaching, people in Indiana and Utah need to stand up and tell Lugar and Hatch to change course.

The TV ads, both entitled “Debt” start running statewide tomorrow in Indiana and Utah. To view the ad running in Indiana, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xehJX_LXx04 or click here. To view the ad running in Utah, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkaCR8rjxJk or click here.

“As we near the culmination of the debate over the debt limit in Washington, Republicans must stand strong for genuine spending cuts to get to a balanced budget, strict spending caps and permanent reform,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “A close examination of the 35-year records of Senators Lugar and Hatch raises serious concerns about whether they will ultimately insist on this. Senator Lugar and Senator Hatch must hear the loud voices of constituents fed up with never-ending spending and debt.”

Script for “Debt” (Indiana) (:30)

Thirty-five years. That’s how long Richard Lugar has been in Washington.

What’s he done about our debt?

Lugar voted for the Wall Street bailout, the car company bailouts, the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout.

Back in the 1970s, he even voted to bail out New York City.

Now, with 14 trillion in debt, Lugar will soon vote on raising our debt limit even higher.

After thirty-five long years, tell Richard Lugar: no more debt.

Script for “Debt” (Utah) (:30)

Thirty-five years. That’s how long Orrin Hatch has been in Washington.

What’s he done about our debt?

Hatch voted for the Wall Street bailout, and the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailouts.

Hatch voted to raise the debt limit five times in the last decade alone.

Now, with 14 trillion in debt, he’ll soon vote on raising our debt limit even higher.

After thirty-five long years, tell Orrin Hatch: no more debt.
