Biography

James Uthmeier is a proud graduate of the University of Florida, where he competed on the varsity track and cross-country teams for the National Champion Gators. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a member of the Federalist Society.

Before becoming Florida’s Attorney General, Uthmeier served as Chief of Staff and General Counsel to Governor Ron DeSantis, and as campaign manager for DeSantis’ 2024 presidential campaign. Earlier in his career, he served in the first Trump Administration as Senior Counsel and Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Commerce from 2017-2019. Prior to working in the Trump Administration, he practiced law at Jones Day.

A strong conservative, Uthmeier champions the rule of law, originalism, and free markets. He worked with Governor DeSantis to expand school choice, keep Florida open during the pandemic, and prohibit mask and vaccine mandates.
