The Club for Growth issued the following statement after the announcement of the removal of import taxes on Canadian and Mexican aluminum and steel as well as delay the implementation of auto tariffs on the European Union and Japan.

“Free trade benefits everyone, and President Trump deserves a lot of credit for his tough and smart negotiations that will now leave us in a better position than where we started,” said Club for Growth President David McIntosh. “Removing and delaying these tariffs will bring down prices for American consumers and put our businesses on more of a level playing field with their foreign competitors. Now that the a deal has been reached to lift the tariffs on steel and aluminum, we encourage Congress to pass the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).”

BACKGROUND: In December 2018, David McIntosh wrote an opinion editorial in The Wall Street Journal encouraging President Trump to lift the tariffs on steel and aluminum.
