Key Vote Alert “NO” on Families First Coronavirus Response Act, H.R. 6201

  |

Club for Growth opposes the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, H.R. 6201. The legislation is expected to be considered soon in the United States House of Representatives. The result of the vote will be included in the Club for Growth Foundation’s 2020 Congressional Scorecard.

The Majority leadership in the House of Representatives recently introduced rushed-legislation in order to provide economic stimulus to support the federal response to the coronavirus outbreak. Rather than rushing legislation through Congress, federal lawmakers should determine whether the emergency supplemental that was recently passed is sufficient in thwarting the outbreak of the coronavirus. There is total uncertainty on what the impact will be for families and workers facing economic hardship. Clearly the majority remembers the words of Rahm Emanuel, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you could not do before.”

In this instance, that means taking steps toward paid leave, expanding unemployment insurance, expanding food stamps, and so much more – and all of these costs are born on the American taxpayer. There is not a cost-estimate for this legislation, and it is being considered under a closed rule, so there will not be any chance for Representatives to amend the legislation. Members of Congress should reject “legislating by crisis” and determine what additional steps are necessary to contain the outbreak of the disease and protect the American people.

Club for Growth Foundation’s Congressional Scorecard for the 116th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to the public.
