KEY VOTE ALERT – “NO” ON FOR THE PEOPLE ACT, H.R. 1

  |

The Club for Growth opposes the For the People Act of 2019, H.R. 1 and urges all Representatives to vote NO on it.  A vote is expected this week in the House.  The results of this vote will be included in the Club’s 2019 congressional scorecard.

The For the People Act tramples on the most sacred words of the Constitution. The legislation would dismantle the First Amendment by totally changing political speech. The right of the American people to criticize our elected officials is what separates us from China, Venezuela and Cuba. But this legislation would take away political anonymity for many by drastically changing reporting requirements for Americans exercising political speech.

The bill also would effectively prevent nonprofit organizations from communicating with a Member of Congress about any policy issue. It is undeniably undemocratic to limit free speech rights and prevent any American citizen from petitioning Congress.

The bill also includes a major provision providing political welfare for politicians. It would provide candidates with taxpayer subsidy – $6 for every $1, which means that taxpayers’ money would fund even more of what they disagree with, including candidates for federal office. Federal candidates don’t need a subsidy akin to food stamps. And the American people don’t need even more of our hard-earned dollars wasted.

Our Congressional Scorecard for the 116th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to our members and to the public.
