No on Reconciliation

The Club for Growth opposes the Biden/Pelosi reconciliation bill, and urges all Representatives to vote NO. A vote is likely to occur soon in the House. The results of this vote will be included in the Club for Growth Foundation’s 2021 congressional scorecard.

For months, Democrats in Washington have worked through private negotiations with the Biden Administration on a plan that will impede progress toward an economic recovery with the highest tax increase in American history, combined with trillions in federal spending programs. Meanwhile, inflation – a hidden tax increase – is crushing Americans, their families, and their businesses. This legislation only exacerbates the inflationary effects that are badly damaging the U.S. economy. But Progressives are bound and determined on enacting their socialist agenda through a completely partisan vote that will increase taxes for working families across America.

Americans overwhelmingly oppose this legislation. 56% of all voters and 62% of independent voters are less likely to vote for a representative who supports Biden’s massive tax and spend legislation. 77% oppose raising individual income taxes and 69% of voters oppose raising federal taxes. A plurality of Americans (32%) believe the infrastructure & spending bills will hurt people like them while only 25% believe their lives would improve.

Democrats’ goal is control – control over the daily decisions American individuals make to live a prosperous life, whether it’s in the workplace, schools, parks, or a home. Government interference in our lives takes away our freedom. This bill would enact Green New Deal policies that revoke our freedoms, destroy opportunities for American families, and create dependence on government at a level never felt before in America.

The Democrats’ tax increases would result in less jobs, lower productivity, lower wages, and allow U.S. competitors to flourish while Americans are left behind. In fact, the Joint Committee on Taxation has determined these tax increases will hit all American individuals. Joe Biden has repeatedly dissembled about the Democrats’ mission to increase taxes on the American people.

The budgetary effects of the spending and tax increases in this rushed legislation has not even been scored by the Congressional Budget Office. By proceeding without CBO scoring of the bill, Democrats continue to dissemble about its impact on creating even more inflation – higher gas, food, energy, and practically all goods and services. Major changes have been made to the bill through secret negotiations without sufficient debate or transparency that could possibly give the American people an opportunity to consider calling on lawmakers to support or oppose it. Instead, the rhetorical propaganda laid out by the Biden Administration and Congressional leadership has pitted political parties against each other. Nancy Pelosi has notoriously said that Congress needs to pass legislation so we can find out what’s in it. This bill is no different. The details are not fully processed or understood by Members of Congress or the American People.

Club for Growth believes this is the most significant legislation to be considered by Congress in a generation and encourages all Members of the House and Senate to oppose it in the strongest terms.
