“YES” ON SIGNING THE LEE LETTER TO COMMIT AGAINST REPEALING THE BAN ON EARMARKS

  |

Club for Growth supports a letter being circulated by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) which commits Senators to vote against repealing the ban on earmarks and pledges against participating in the wasteful spending practice that is prone to abuse. Whether a Senator signs the Lee letter will be included in the Club for Growth Foundation’s 2021 Congressional Scorecard.

Club for Growth strongly opposes earmarking in federal spending. Earmarks, member directed appropriations, or community project funding, — whatever they’re called – are the currency of corruption in the DC Swamp. While earmarks make up a small part of federal spending, they are used as legalized bribery to force Members of Congress to accept a small amount of funding for a pet project in a Congressional District in exchange for a large amount of federal spending that too often is not scrutinized by Members of Congress, Congressional staff, or the American public at-large.

Club for Growth encourages all Senators to sign the Lee Letter.  The Culture of Corruption in the federal government is too often accommodated through federal earmarks. Federal spending is broken in Washington. Instead of Congress using earmarks as a way to accommodate federal spending, Congress should work on spending reforms that will decrease the federal deficit, balance the federal budget, and begin to pay down the national debt – without increasing taxes on individuals or businesses.

Club for Growth Foundation’s Congressional Scorecard for the 117th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to the public.
