Basswood Research Poll Finds Lee Viewed Favorably By 76% of Utah Republican Primary Voters

Washington, DC – Today the Club for Growth PAC, Senate Conservatives Fund, and Madison Project released the results of a poll done by Basswood Research in the Utah Senate race of likely Republican Primary voters. The poll finds incumbent Senator Mike Lee in an extremely strong position for re-nomination. Senator Lee is endorsed for re-election by the Club for Growth PAC,  Senate Conservatives Fund, and the Madison Project.

Among the poll highlights:

  • Senator Lee has a +65 favorable rating, with 76% of Utah Republicans having a favorable opinion of Lee and only 11% having an unfavorable opinion. By contrast, Senator Orrin Hatch, while also popular, has a 72% favorable rating and 23% unfavorable rating, a net of +49. Given that Hatch won his 2012 Republican primary 66%-34%, Lee’s even stronger favorability rating indicates that Lee is likely in a very strong position among Republican voters.
  • Senator Lee is broadly popular with all segments of Republican Primary voters. Those who identify as “very conservative” view him favorably 87-4. Voters who identify as “somewhat conservative” view him favorably 75-10. Republican primary voters who identify as moderates (the smallest section of likely Republican primary voters in Utah) also view Lee favorably by a 53-27 ratio.
  • When asked how Senator Lee is doing “supporting local Utah interests and needs”, 71% of likely Republican primary voters approved of the job Lee is doing. 72% approve of the job Lee is doing “being a good role model for Utahns.”

“Senator Mike Lee is a champion for pro-growth policies, so it’s no wonder he looks likely to cruise to the Republican nomination,” said outgoing Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Whether it’s a convention or a primary, it’s clear that Republican voters love Mike Lee and think he deserves another six years.”

“Senator Mike Lee is a principled fighter for Utah taxpayers, which is exactly why Utah Republicans strongly approve of the job he’s doing in Washington,” said newly appointed Club for Growth President David McIntosh. “Senator Lee is one of the strongest advocates of liberty and the constitution we have in Congress, and we look forward to seeing him re-elected in 2016.”

“It’s clear that voters in Utah appreciate Senator Mike Lee’s principled leadership in Washington and want him to keep fighting on their behalf,” said Senate Conservatives Fund President Ken Cuccinelli. “If the Republican establishment wants to defeat Senator Lee in a primary, they have their work cut out for them. Not only do voters in Utah value him, there are thousands of freedom-loving Americans across the country who are ready to go to battle for him.”

“This poll shows what we already know, voters approve of Mike Lee because he governs exactly how he campaigned,” said Madison Project Political Director Drew Ryun. “Lee vowed to oppose the status quo in Washington, D.C. and to fight for the people of Utah and he’s doing just that. His unwavering dedication to defund Obamacare, and reduce wasteful government spending has clearly resonated with the voters.”
