Excerpts From The Oklahoman:

Political pressure is mounting for House Speaker Charles McCall to give a hearing to a controversial education bill that would pay for students to attend private schools or homeschool.

A Washington-based group says it will spend $25,000 to air television commercials that accuse McCall, R-Atoka, of “silencing parents” after the legislative leader expressed opposition to the Oklahoma Empowerment Act, legislation that would drastically expand education savings accounts.

The commercials from the Club for Growth are booked through TV stations in Ada and Sherman, Texas, meaning they will air in McCall’s rural district in southeastern Oklahoma.

The group also says it will send mailers to school choice advocates in McCall’s district. The mailers that say “Charles McCall just came out against school choice” urge people to call the legislative leader’s office.

Last week, McCall told reporters Senate Bill 1647 from Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, won’t get a hearing in the House. The bill that is a priority for Gov. Kevin Stitt still has a few hurdles to clear in the state Senate, where it narrowly passed out of committee this week.

McCall did not respond to a request for comment.

Excerpts From KOCO:

The Conservative political action committee Club for Growth, based out of Washington, said it is spending thousands of dollars to play an attack ad on conservative cable news for the next week. The group also sent mailers to Oklahoma, calling House Speaker Charles McCall “supposedly a Republican” and encouraging Oklahomans to contact him.

McCall’s office told KOCO 5 that they’re not going to respond to the attack ads.
