Club for Growth Action Applauds Defeat of Renee Ellmers (NC-02)

“Ellmers rejected economic conservatism and supported Ex-Im Bank and big government spending.”

Washington, DC – Club for Growth Action, a political arm of the Club for Growth, released the following statement after Congresswoman Renee Ellmers was defeated in the Republican primary in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District by Congressman George Holding:

“The defeat of Renee Ellmers should be a warning to any Republican who campaigns as an economic conservative, but votes for massive spending bills and for corrupt cronyism like the Export-Import Bank,” said Club for Growth Action President David McIntosh. “Today in North Carolina, voters confirmed that Ellmers had rejected their values and become part of the big-government establishment in Washington. Her Club for Growth lifetime rating of 60% and 2015 score of 57% are the worst, by far, of North Carolina’s Republican delegation. CFG Action first took on Ellmers in early February – well before she endorsed Donald Trump – on the simple principle that she has failed her constituents on matters of economic liberty.”

Note: Club for Growth Action spent $700,000 on a television and digital ad opposing Rep. Renee Ellmers. CFG Action first aired the ad in February, before the new court-ordered district boundaries, and re-aired it again in May.
