A Choice Moment: Coronavirus Opens a Path to School Choice

US News & World Report, Lauren Camera

“What we’re seeing in the battleground states is that they’re looking at it as a ballot issue,” says David McIntosh, president of the conservative economic group Club for Growth and former Republican congressman, who is working directly with senior White House officials to keep school choice front and center. “I think it’s going to be key.”

New polling conducted by the Club for Growth’s political action committee after the Republican convention across three key swing states of Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin found that 55% of suburban moms are more likely to vote against Biden once they learn he has taken union-friendly positions of delaying reopening schools due to the coronavirus and opposing school choice.

Moreover, the poll showed 52% of all independents and 54% of Hispanics in those states are also more likely to vote against him for those reasons – the latter figure coming as separate polls show a possible crack in support among Latino voters for the Democratic presidential nominee.

In August, the Club for Growth [Action] launched a $5 million broadcast, digital and cable ad blitz slamming Biden for opposing school choice, an issue on which the organization rarely spends big money. The ads are targeting voters in the same three states – important swing states that Trump won in 2016 but are considered among the most competitive in the 2020 election.

The group is also pushing the issue at the state-level after internal polling of key Senate battleground states of Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Montana and North Carolina showed vulnerable Republican senators would lose support of conservative voters if they supported a major new round of coronavirus relief that does not include some type of education funding that goes directly to parents, with support dropping by as much as 25% in some scenarios.
